This case study critically evaluates the kind of facilities and services available to children across 10 public libraries in Kolkata. A mix of government funded and private libraries were chosen to study the membership pattern, book collection, reading habits and viability of public libraries.

Public library services for children – summary of Mumbai & Konkan libraries

This case critically evaluates the role and functioning of children’s sections of 10 public libraries, seven in Mumbai and three in rural Konkan, in providing access to quality children’s literature and advocating reading and knowledge dissemination among children from diverse backgrounds. All 10 libraries were studied through observations and in-depth interviews with library staff and management.

The detailed study maps the children’s publishing market, key challenges to development of content, marketing an distribution gaps, and lack of skill building opportunities. It also tries to understand access to children’s literature through libraries and benchmarks these against international standards.

This is a summary of a detailed fellowship report that tried to make a case for a particular method of reading aloud which has been successful with children in different parts of the country. But the idea is not to advocate just one way of reading aloud. The idea is to begin thinking about ways in which we can enable children to associate ‘reading’ with something pleasurable and fun.
