This case study critically evaluates the kind of facilities and services available to children across 10 public libraries in Kolkata. A mix of government funded and private libraries were chosen to study the membership pattern, book collection, reading habits and viability of public libraries.
Public library services for children – summary of Mumbai & Konkan libraries
This case critically evaluates the role and functioning of children’s sections of 10 public libraries, seven in Mumbai and three in rural Konkan, in providing access to quality children’s literature and advocating reading and knowledge dissemination among children from diverse backgrounds. All 10 libraries were studied through observations and in-depth interviews with library staff and management.

This is a summary of a detailed fellowship report that tried to make a case for a particular method of reading aloud which has been successful with children in different parts of the country. But the idea is not to advocate just one way of reading aloud. The idea is to begin thinking about ways in which we can enable children to associate ‘reading’ with something pleasurable and fun.
Evolving a library resource support group
This study conducted by Vidya Bhawan Society looked at setting up a library resource support group after discussion with selected organisations doing library work. The aim was to understand the different means in which a resource group could support librarians and library activities and bring libraries to the forefront of school education.
This study looks at Children’s Literature in Language Textbooks and particularly children’s literature in Hindi language textbooks. It critically examines the pedagogical, ethical, social and political implications of stories in language textbooks. In addition, visual aesthetics, a very significant and generally neglected area is also examined. It explore issues peculiar to Hindi language textbooks.
